Clair-Obscure

Commissioned by Oregon Ballet Theatre, Clair-Obscure is inspired by an aesthetic pull towards paintings by artists known for “Clair-Obscure” like Caravaggio and Rembrandt, as well as my fascination with the choices people make in how we present ideas — what we prioritize, what we conceal.

French for “light” (clair) and “shadow” (obscure), clair-obscure is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark in visual art. In painting, this technique typically involves light colors painted over a dark background, achieving a sense of volume and realism. It also directs the viewer where to look, highlighting certain people or objects within a scene.
